Bimodal IT Definition:

Bimodal IT is a new way to manage IT services in organizations, in which the traditional IT (focused on stability, security and accuracy) is coupled with a new form of management, which is more exploratory, and focuses on agility and speed to develop and integrate solutions to face all the different situations presented by the market.

Do you know why it is necessary to create a new IT?

Is the traditional IT obsolete? On the contrary, it is more important than ever. So, what is it all about? Actually, IT has evolved: it is more intricate and requires teams to be able to manage technological innovation steadily, as threats can come, for example, from small and agile startups.

In this post you will get a few insights on why it pays off to carry out this upgrade in your business.

Bimodal IT – Modes 1  & Modo 2

So, let’s see how Mode 1 works and how Mode 2 can be added to the natural activities of any IT department.

Bimodal IT – Mode 1: traditional IT won’t die

This IT mode will always serve as a foundation, after all, it’s necessary to take care of the operation in order to ensure they are robust and secure. Through this mode, innovations that paved the way to the technological revolution we are experiencing today, were generated. This creates IT systems and platforms and its professionals have several responsibilities, such as:

– Managing existing corporate systems, ensuring all liabilities work in

a coordinated manner;

–  Generating value through performance;

–  Being responsible for selecting suppliers;

– Having a team of generalists and specialists with a variety of

talents;

–  They can and must innovate, but have constant responsibilities related to maintenance.

Bimodal IT – Mode 2: challenging standards

Then, why is it necessary to think of a more innovative IT? Isn’t this redundant?

According to research from the Gartner Group (the creators of the term "Bimodal IT"), the IT department is often conditioned to follow traditional management models, which frequently doesn’t act in accordance with the fact that society and individual behaviors are being rapidly transformed by IT.

For this reason, we need to add further strategic management to the way we manage IT. In order for IT to take on this role, which is crucial to the organization, it’s necessary to absorb the organizational marketing interests. The creation of this internal integration should be aligned to the marketing reality: IT is responsible for changes in culture, environment, tools and methodologies, within the business environment as well as outside. It is necessary to:

– Aim to generate innovation and conquer new markets;

– Focus on revenue, brand and UX (user experience);

– Develop partnerships with new and small suppliers (ex.: startups);

– Find unconventional profiles and talents that can challenge standards and have enough knowledge in several areas in order to make innovation operational.
